A Father’s Military Service: Layers of Trauma & Familial Healing:
“Let’s do a show tonight Mom!”
Never a dull moment at our house. This surprise Saturday night request ended up being a “processing” of how my son felt about his school being closed for the rest of the school year due to a graffiti gun violence threat.
The Slurpee Solution:
Disclaimer: My son and I need to process tough stuff in our unique way and I did not want to overly traumatize him about revisiting the Uvalde Victims to trigger fear in him after his school got shut down for gun threats on Thursday for the rest of the year.
I intentionally lightly addressed it and shifted attention to the positive. Please listen to the thoughtful show Jake Myers and I did this week that is geared towards adults only.
Sending love to all of you.
xoxo
The Mindful Pivot: Prayers for the Uvalde Victims and One Humanity
How do we stay SANE and keep BALANCE in our every day life, especially if we are recovering perfectionists?
We need to ADAPT and walk the path of ADAPTIVE perfectionism vs. restrictive perfectionism.
Ex: This show was recorded and supposed to launch a few days ago.
A mindful pause happened to honor:
~emergencies in my psychiatry practice
~to process the tragedy in Uvalde and loss of 21 innocent victims
(with my son, on shows, with my patients, & with prayer)
~ to respond to a safety pivot (school remote rest of year) due to a violent gun threat at my son’s school
Time in nature, unplugging, and staying in gratitude for all the everyday blessings allows a mind/body/soul RESET for all of US.

“I knew that sobriety would never work for me if I didn’t I knew that sobriety would never work for me if I didn’t create a life of fun, excitement, adventure, and happiness. So I set out to build a strong foundation for this new way of life.
I began an IOP (intensive outpatient program) where I attended group via zoom 3 hours a night, 3 nights a week, for 4 months. This helped me in so many ways from connecting with other alcoholics, to having assignments that helped provide insight into my disease. I also got a therapist that specialized in substance abuse and began seeing her weekly. She helped me through a lot of the trauma that I had been self-medicating to survive for so many years. I still see her bi-weekly!
I found a Psychiatrist and got on the right prescriptions for depression, and anxiety and I also got on a once a month craving-blocker shot. (Not having cravings for alcohol was HUGE for my early recovery.) I was also on medicine for sleep and anger. (Today I am completely med free, but having these as I navigated early sobriety was very useful for me.)
I read a lot of quit lit (quitting literature) you can find a list on the resources page. These books really helped me to see the great parts of being sober, and that I would still be able to enjoy my life without alcohol.
Finally, I started a sober Instagram & Facebook page @shaysober to keep me accountable and as a daily reprieve in my pocket. I share there every day and love connecting with my sober instagram community.”
Shay Sober is back just in time to discuss all things mental health, childhood trauma, and her celebration of 2 years sober.
